De-stressing inside and out!

Stress relief is important to the overall health of our bodies from sleeping to weight loss and even the health of our skin can be attributed to our stress levels. There are many techniques available to help us with stress relief. Going to the spa, eating healthy foods, exercising and using supplements can all aid with stress relief. According to the ISPA spa goer study, the number one reason why individuals choose to go to the spa is for stress relief. De-stressing goes beyond just feeling better and dealing with difficult situations. There is an entire other side to stress that occurs on the inside of your body.

Stress within the body
The accepted definition of stress is the emotional and physical strain caused by our response to pressure from the outside world. Stress begins in the brain by intense hormone surges and neurological signals and from there, it can begin to trickle its effects to other parts of the body. Ultimately, too much stress will negatively affect the functionality of every bodily system including the circulatory, nervous, digestive, and immune and even our muscle and skeletal system.

When we go through stress every function in our body is disrupted. Our nutrient absorption is affected in two ways – one by choosing the wrong foods during stressful times and two our blood vessels begin to constrict, which raises our blood pressure and decreases circulation. When circulation isn’t at its optimal performance our body does not obtain the vitamins or minerals needed to overcome the negative effects of stress. Hormone release is interrupted causing digestive functions to be interrupted. Finally, our immune system can be negatively affected due to lowered white blood cell count making us more prone to infections.

The power of nutrients to help the body cope with stress
An imbalance in our diet or a vitamin deficiency has been linked to damaging the stability of the human body. Now add stress or even chronic stress to the picture and the imbalances increase from hormone secretions to neurotransmitters sending wrong data to our brain. With the right combination of nutrients the body can overcome some of these abnormalities and provide the body with nutrition it needs to handle stress at the cellular level. Here are some of the nutrients found in Calm to help your body combat stress.

Lactium®
Lactium is a milk protein hydrolysate that contains a bioactive peptide with anti-stress properties. It has been tested in several human clinical trials with positive results depicting stress relief. Lactium is a food grade ingredient that has no side effects and is lactose free. In addition, studies have shown that Lactium results
in a significantly positive evolution of stress symptoms in 5 different areas: digestive, cardiovascular, mental, emotional, and social. For more information please visit www.lactium.com.

B-Complex Combination
B vitamins have been well researched for their anti-stress properties. B1 (thiamine) is essential for nervous system support, muscular function, and cardiovascular function, all of which are adversely affected by stress. B2 (Riboflavin) is essential for the proper functioning of the adrenal gland and digestive system. Niacin, or vitamin B6, is essential in production of hormones related to libido and stress. It is a natural source of energy and provides support for enhancing circulation and stabilizing cholesterol levels. B12 is integrated in the formula to assist in the maintenance of healthy nerve cells and red blood cells. Vitamin B5, Pantothenic acid assists in the normal production of
neurotransmitters. Deficiency in any of these B-vitamins can cause abnormal neurotransmitter production resulting in difficulty of dealing with stressful situations.

Inositol
Inositol has been widely researched clinically to assist neuro-functioning. Inositol acts as a guidance signal for neurotransmitters, produced by the brain, for proper cellular communication to support stress relief.

GABA
GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) has been researched since the 1950’s as a neurotransmitter regulator in the brain. The regulation of neurotransmitter release from the brain aids in preventing restlessness, irritability, insomnia, and seizures. GABA is able to induce relaxation without any sedative effects.

Rhodiola rosea
This ancient herb has been the topic of many research and clinical studies. It has been used for centuries by European and Asian civilizations to support conditions of fatigue, depression, gastrointestinal ailments, and nervous system disorders. Further research has indicated that Rhodiola rosea protect animals and humans from mental and physical stress and toxins and colds. Neurologically, this herb has been shown to relieve fatigue and increase attention span, memory and work productivity.

Panax Ginseng
Popularly referred to as “adaptogen”, stress aiding nutrient. Ginseng has been studied to increase resistance to physical, chemical, and biological stress. Ginseng has been traditionally used in ancient Chinese medicine for thousands of years to prevent weakness and fatigue.

Ashwangandha
This herb is a well-known Ayurvedic herbal ingredient. It comes from a plant used therapeutically by people in India and Africa for boosting immunity, mental clarity, and total body rejuvenation. Clinically, it has been researched to aid in mental deficiencies, cognition-enhancing and improving memory.

Magnesium
Magnesium is a well-researched mineral responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. Magnesium has been shown to help maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, and keeps bones strong. Magnesium regulates blood sugar levels, and promotes normal blood pressure, which provides support in stress relief.

Calcium
Calcium’s benefits cover a wide range of health issues including stress. Calcium supports the optimal function of the nervous system, aiding in the production of energy, stabilizing proper heart rate, and supporting normal muscle contraction and calming nerves.

Sequence XO’s Calm – the anti-stress tonic
Calm has been specifically formulated to assist the body’s natural ability to handle stress. Our formula includes every ingredient listed above in effort to provide a formula that provides stress and tension relief at the cellular level. Calm has been designed as an effervescent tablet to create a tastefully satisfying anti-stress tonic to help melt your stress away.

The 3 D’s to Healthy living – De-stress, Detoxify and Defend

Relaxation can be hard to come by, especially if our body is dependant on caffeine or nicotine to keep us on our toes all day. Many of these internal and external toxins can disrupt our natural equilibrium flow, which potentially alter the key to maintaining good health. Toxins present an added burden on the body that deplete our energy and disrupt the normal functioning of the body. By simply adding a detoxification program, exercising and treating yourself to a spa treatment can keep you healthy, energized and feeling younger.

The detox factor for a healthier immune response

Detoxification through proper digestive function plays a key role in our ability to live healthier. Research has shown that keeping a healthy, clean colon is an effective tool. Remember, our blood has direct contact with our colon. If your colon is packed with toxins (waste), then that waste is releasing toxins into your blood, which ultimately travels throughout your entire body. Colon health is directly related to proper digestion and a healthy diet. It is difficult to keep a detoxified body in the world we live in today. Our food is packed with preservatives and sugar, while being treated and controlled with pesticides and genetic alterations. Additionally, we are trained to take prescription or over the counter drugs to mask effects of almost any condition. Now more than ever is the time for all of us to take a proactive approach to detoxify. With proper detoxification we can have a more optimal digestive system, immune system, and circulatory system.

With stress relief and proper detoxification, our bodies will spend less time trying to clean and release stress and more time helping us protect against infection and disease. Remember, our body is a living machine, always repairing and defending. If we can help it by having it focus on building a stronger immune system, then we can live a longer, cleaner, and a more stress free life.

Did you know?
The normal transit time of waste through the digestive tract is 24-48 hours. Low fiber diets can increase the normal flow up to 96 or more hours. When waste is impacted in the colon the toxins can be reabsorbed into the blood stream and begin to pollute our blood and organs, which can lead to the poisoning of the body.

How to incorporate Calm in your spa

Step One: Provide the 15-Minute Relaxing Fizz to your clients!

Calm is a product created to help your client’s release tension before a spa treatment. Calm can be used within your spa by serving 8-ounces, 15 to 30 minutes before a spa treatment to enhance the spa experience of every client. You can premix Calm or have individuals add their own fizzing tablet into a water bottle!

Step Two: Offering a spa experience that touches on a few senses!

Calm is not only visually relaxing with its effervescent bubbles, but also offers another sense – olfactory! Yes, the sense of smell – as the natural smell of cucumber and mint slowly drift up through the nostrils to provide a feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation. Then as the tablet reaches full dissolution the taste of cucumber-mint gives your clients a satisfying and refreshing familiarity to the spas cucumber water to top off a stress-free experience.

But we also need to acknowledge the other wonderful benefits of this fizzing tablet such as boosting immunity, supporting healthy skin, helping to protect the heart and also providing a connection from the internal to external spa treatments!

Step Three: Your Retail Presence

When presenting Calm to your clients at the retail counter, remember to mention their internal stress relief comes in a 30 day supply at only $1.33 per serving.

The skinny on holiday weight gain…

Fortunately, just thinking about holiday cookies, cheesecake, honey-glazed ham and egg nog can’t make you gain weight, however we all like to indulge a little during this time of year. You don’t have to completely deny yourself, you just need to be smart about countering all the “bad” foods with good nutrition.

The Solution: Antioxidants and Portion Control

Have you ever heard about “The French Paradox”? This refers to findings indicating that although the French consume some of the richest foods in the world, the population as a whole is much more slender than Americans. The French Paradox starts with two phenomenons – the high consumption of red wine polyphenols and the other is portion control. “Even though the French eat more fat than Americans, they probably eat slightly fewer calories, which when compounded over years can amount to substantial differences in weight”, said Paul Rozin, professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Though as a society we are eating less fat then the French but we’re also eating about 25 percent larger serving sizes. Next time you are at the buffet table and you want to taste the array of foods just take a bite size – you’ll satisfy every taste bud and lower your chances of battling the bulge in January.

Where do the antioxidants come from in wine?

Red wine contains powerful polyphenols and flavonoids that have a variety of health benefits – promoting healthy cholesterol levels, inhibiting hardening of arterial walls and boosting immunity. Also in that glass of wine you have the skin and seeds of grapes. The skins and seeds are highly concentrated with proanthocyanidins – what has come to be known as the most potent form of antioxidants.

Fusion: Why it's your antioxidant solution!

Fusion combines world renown ingredients from the most exotic places in the world that have been using such ingredients for thousands of years for longevity and good health. One of these revolutionary ingredients is grape seed extract – a subclass of proanthocyanidins originating in France. Grape seed extract has been extensively researched and continuously utilized source of antioxidants to help in the strengthening of the veins, arteries, capillaries, nerve endings and even sugar management.

Green Tea has been traditionally used in Asia for centuries promoting and array of health benefits to the body ranging from healthy skin and weight loss to immune enhancing and supporting a healthy cardiovascular system. This is such an important ingredient to the health of our bodies today that we included this in both our Fusion and Radiance formulas. Everyday more and more exciting research is uncovered demonstrating great promise in benefiting the health of our teeth and providing antibacterial properties. Much more research is needed in these new discoveries but the documented studies are extensive.

Fusion is a great addition to any detoxification, weight-management and healthy aging program. For more details click here!

Antioxidants are a useful tool in the fight against premature aging of our bodies. To learn more about grape seed extract, green tea or other important antioxidants please visit the National Center For Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Spa Treatments and Spa Nutrition

It’s no secret that consumers have adjusted their way of thinking when it comes to the spa experience. The spa, once thought of a place only for the wealthy to be pampered, has now transformed to a popular place for holistic healing and wellness. Today, the spa offers number of therapeutic solutions for arthritis, inflammation, pain, skin disorders, stress, and fatigue with the use of ancient remedies and practices. These therapies often incorporate vitamins, minerals, plants, spices and herbs to provide healing and total rejuvenation.

Nutritional supplements have a very similar foundation. Physicians of old used natural medicine to help heal patient’s ailments. At the turn of the twentieth century however, the United States saw a shift in medical practices and began branding natural therapies and the spa as hogwash and old wives’ tales. The medical community replaced ancient remedies with modern pharmaceutical creations focused on treating a disease instead of preventing it. Though with time and education even the most conservative minds have begun to see the health benefits of nutritional supplements.

In the early 1990s the Journal of the American Medical Association and New England Journal of Medicine began recommending vitamin supplements for many health conditions. The birth of alternative medicine in the media mainstream has made nutritional supplements a hot topic among all avenues of healthy living.

The Best of Both Worlds Under One Roof
Here is a list of some ingredients used within the spa and in supplements. Whether your guests are enjoying these ingredients as a spa treatment or as a nutritional aid we think you and your guests will love the Sequence XO product line. Fish oils, carrots and leafy vegetables.

Why do we need vitamin E?
This fat soluble vitamin is mainly used by your body as an antioxidant to protect the body from cellular damage and protects the cardiovascular system and is essential for energy metabolism.
Topical uses:
Vitamin E has been used to rejuvenate skin by decreasing inflammation and has shown to reduce scarring.

A recent study by Professor Pierfrancesco Morganti from the University of Naples, reports that Lutein applied topically in combination with oral supplementation increased skin protection six fold from free radical damage, boosted skin hydration and elasticity.
Internal uses:
As little as 10 mg of Lutein a day showed a significant boost in skin hydration, elasticity and superficial lipids of skin.

Green leafy vegetables, yellow and orange fruits and vegetables and egg yolk.

What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a component of connective tissue whose function is to cushion and lubricate joints, heart valves, eyes and much more. This ingredient is often called “the fountain of youth” because of its history of usage in cultures known to have long life spans.
Topical uses:
Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the deeper layers of the skin and has shown to keep skin smooth, supple, and moisturized, plus helps heal scars and wounds.

Spa Nutrition™: A new kind of retail that brings the spa experience and at-home product experience to a different level!

Spa enthusiasts are looking for products that can get them closer to the spa experience while away from their favorite spa according to industry experts. You may also be aware that the Day Spas leading retail sellers are in fact the products they use in their treatment rooms. Traditionally topical skin care lines, cosmetics and hair care have controlled the retail shelves. But what if a new product was to be introduced that shared the same core benefits as its topical counterparts? You may also be interested to know that recent statistics show that 62 percent of your guests are already using these products!

Nutrition and dietary supplements seem to be driving a new kind of retail into the spa industry. It is estimated that a 19 percent increase in nutritional products within the retail sector is expected in 2008. As mentioned above the leading retail sellers within the spa are the products they incorporate into their treatment rooms. What if there was a nutritional product that would break its traditional role of being just a retail product?

Sequence XO developed an extraordinary nutritional line of supplements that not only fit within the retail sector, but actually took into consideration the way spa treatments work. Co-founders Ben Hoss and Karen Lopez have taken their 15 years of combined expertise in health and nutrition and connected it with their love for the spa. “Our products originated from the healing science of spa treatments to enhance the spa experience of spa enthusiast whether it be at their favorite spa or at home,” said Karen Lopez. Sequence XO’s competitive edge is that unlike any supplement in the market today. The SXO product line creates an easy connection between the external treatments for beautiful skin and the inner nutritional needs your guests require. There is no quick and easy fix to the accelerated aging of our bodies, but there are solutions to keep us aging healthfully and maintaining a youthful appearance until we are 110!

Choosing the right retail products or vendors for your spa

Choosing the right products is important in the success of your retail presence. If you don’t believe in the product, then you will not have the passion to sell it to your clients. Make sure you research the products you are thinking of carrying. Ask:

  • What the ingredients are?
  • Can it be used in treatments (before, during and after)?
  • Is it unique in any way when compared to other products?
  • Is it exclusive to the spa?
  • Does it provide a solution to what your clients need?
  • Does the product have enough shelf presence?

Choosing the right vendor is just as important as the product itself. Establishing a working relationship with your vendor will ultimately allow you to succeed in your retail adventure. There are a several things to take into consideration when choosing the vendors you work with. These include:

  • Support before the sale (can they represent their product well?)
  • Support after the sale (do they provide you with training, marketing and sales support?)
  • How proactive are they with their follow up?
  • What do they offer to support the success of your retail plan (will they provide added marketing and advertising support?

The Power of Pomegranate

For centuries, pomegranate has been utilized by many civilizations for its wonderful benefits. Throughout history, pomegranate has been referred to as a symbol of health, fertility and eternal life. Pomegranate is one of the earths oldest known fruits. It is a native of Persia, yet its historical uses span to Greek mythology, Chinese ceremonies and even Egyptian rituals. Now, even science has begun proving pomegranates health benefits. From blood pressure to skin care and even prostate support, pomegranate is a fruit that everyone can benefit from.

Pomegranate and your heart

A major factor in keeping a healthy heart is through proper circulation. A properly functioning circulatory system needs to have blood flowing through veins and arteries without any barriers. Hardening of arteries refers to the build up of plaque in the walls of the arteries. This decreases blood flow which can eventually lead to heart attacks and strokes. Arterial hardening can be caused by many factors including poor diet, oxidative damage from free radicals and even stress. Research has shown that pomegranate enhances circulation and may reduce blood vessel damage.

The Good & The Ugly: Pomegranate & Cholesterol

To put it simply, LDL equals bad cholesterol and HDL equals good cholesterol. LDL is known as bad cholesterol because it tends to build up in many areas of the body in the form of plaque, which inhibits circulation. HDL is known as the good cholesterol because at higher levels HDL seems to protect against heart attacks and studies have shown that people who have low levels of HDL are more prone to heart problems. Additionally, HDL seems to regulate the transport of lipids in the body.

So how does pomegranate come into play? As a potent antioxidant, pomegranate helps regulate the degree at which cholesterol is oxidized. Pomegranate has also been shown to stabilize the retention of LDL cholesterol. We may finally have the upper hand on the battle against bad cholesterol by incorporating the powerful benefits of pomegranate into the mix of healthy eating and exercise.

Just for Men

The growing problem of enlarged prostate in men is becoming a large concern. It is estimated that 50% of men over 50 will develop a prostate issue that can lead to bothersome urinary and bladder problems. It is more important now than ever to take extra measures to ensure prevention of an unhealthy prostate by supplementing with the right ingredients. Pomegranate has been found to have a supporting role in maintaining a healthy prostate. Other great nutrients include saw palmetto, green tea, lycopene and soy. Supporting your prostate today will increase your ability to have a healthy prostate in the future.

Spa Nutrition: Men's Nutrients
Green Tea: It’s in the preliminary evidence stage but research has suggested a plant substance called EGCG, present in green tea leaves may prove useful in the fight against prostate issues. Found in SXO’s Radiance and Fusion

Selenium: This trace mineral is also known as a powerful antioxidant. Selenium was the center of a ten-year cancer prevention trail suggesting that selenium may help protect the health of the prostate. Selenium is safe in amounts of 200-400 mcg of L-selenomethionine (usually from brewer’s yeast). Found in SXO’s Fusion

Vitamin E: According to recent studies, men with high levels of vitamin E were 53 percent less likely to develop prostate issues. Found in SXO’s Fusion

Lycopene: This antioxidant is richly found in tomatoes and has been extensively researched for its support against many types of disease in 57 of 72 studies. The evidence shows that lycopene protective effects are stronger for prostate issues. Found in SXO’s Radiance

Internal Skin Care & Pomegranate

Photo-aging is a term that is becoming more mainstream in the world of skin care. Photo-aging refers to the premature aging of the skin due to exposure to the harmful rays of UV light, which comes from the sun or artificial light. In a recent study conducted by the Department of Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin, researchers suggested that pomegranate fruit extract protects specific skin cells against UVB-induced oxidative stress. It is more important now than ever to protect ourselves and ensure that we are taking preventative measures by supplementing with skin strengthening ingredients, such as pomegranate, to allow for more radiant and stronger skin.

Protection Against Photo-aging
Exposure to UV light account for 90 percent of the symptoms of premature skin aging, and most of the effects by age 20. Photo-aging is a relatively new term defining the process by which skin is damaged as a result of exposure to UV sunlight. UV light is one of the most prominent environmental stresses on our skin, causing sunburn, premature skin aging, discoloration and skin cancer.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ultraviolet radiation is a proven human carcinogen. Research now indicates that several nutrients and antioxidants can aid in protecting and healing of damaged skin.

Staying young is a secret we would all like to unveil. It’s important to understand that how we take care of our skin today will have an effect on how our skin looks 10 or 20 years from now. Oral supplementation of antioxidants is a great addition to your sun protection regimen. But remember antioxidants are not a substitute for sunscreen. Take care of your skin today with a powerful combination of antioxidants and a daily SPF moisturizer!

Spa Retail: Nutritional Supplements

The face of the functional food industry (which includes nutritional supplements) has become sophisticated, producing a plenitude of innovative new products and an increasing number of savvy and scrupulous consumers. With all of the different products available in the market, it is difficult to determine what, how, and where to get the products that best fit a unique individuals needs. It is important to understand how this growing industry will eventually fit within our own lives. The focus here is to cover some frequently asked questions as they relate to nutritional supplements, and some enlightening answers to accompany them.

Q: What benefits are associated with taking nutritional supplements?
A: There are many benefits associated with taking nutritional supplements correctly, consistently, and effectively. What we all must remember is that our bodies are rejuvenating and repairing machines. Given the right tools, our bodies can defend against many health conditions. Nutritional supplements give our bodies the tools and ability to heal itself. Deficiencies in different nutrients deprive the body’s ability to heal effectively. Our bodies are a combination of many cells working together to achieve a common goal. It is at the cellular level where all functions of the body begin. Supplementing nutritionally provides our cells with the adequate “food” needed to function at an optimal level and allow us to live a healthier lifestyle.

Q: Don’t I get enough nutritional support from the food that I eat?
A: Foods we eat today are not necessarily the same foods that our grandparents use to eat. Different methods of food production, processing and farming have negatively affected the nutrient content in the foods we eat today. From fruits and vegetables to meats, poultry, dairy and even the oils we use to cook food, nutrient content is at an all time low. We simply cannot get the optimal amount of nutritional benefits from the foods that we eat today. The answer is to supplement with nutritional supplements we know contain the right nutrients in the right amounts.
Examples of poor foods today:

  • Frequent crop rotations in farming deplete the soil of vital nutrients and minerals
  • Mass-produced vegetables and fruits are missing key phytonutrients, bioflavanoids, and minerals.
  • Good fat has been replaced with trans fats and saturated fats

Q: How long will nutritional supplements take for me to see a difference in my health?
A: Many nutritional supplements vary in their results. For example, SXO’s Calm formula can be felt immediately within hours to a couple of days. However, most nutritional supplements take at least 2-3 months before you start to see the benefits, but whether your body internally has begun healing is a different story. Nutritional support enhances the body’s function in a gradual process from the inside out so it may take a while before those positive effects are actually seen outside of the body. The best answer is to follow a healthy lifestyle of incorporating a healthy diet, regular exercise, nutritional support and the use of spa treatments to help protect your body from unhealthy aging.

TIP OF THE DAY: Try taking a certain type of nutritional supplement regimen and log your day-to-day functionality as it relates to your body. After 3 months, stop taking the supplement for a week and log the way you feel then. Chances are, you will be pleasantly surprised at how much support your supplements were giving you. Because of its gradual enhancement of body functions, the positive affects of nutritional supplements are not noticed.

Q: How often do I have to take nutritional supplement products?
A: Different goals require their own unique standards to reach. If you are an individual who is looking to take preventative measures in leading a healthy lifestyle, then consider taking a nutritional supplement such as a multivitamin or antioxidant in a consistent manner to help achieve your health goals. And even then, a maintenance dose would be beneficial for a healthy lifestyle. As a rule of thumb, taking certain supplements consistently, for a healthy lifestyle is the best answer.

TIPS on taking nutritional supplements
  • Always start slow with one to two dosages every other day and allow your body to absorb, adjust and evolve to nutritional supplements
  • Remember, supplements are not drugs, so consistent consumption is key to reaching your goal
  • Remember what your health goal is and adjust your consumption of nutritional supplements to help you reach those goals
Q: How does taking nutritional supplements fit in with spa treatments?
A: Spa treatments have been known for their therapeutic and healing abilities from the outside-in. Imagine receiving spa treatments from the inside-out. That is what taking the right nutritional supplements will do when combined with your choices of spa treatments. Spa treatments assist your body by allowing rejuvenation, circulation and enhancement to the cellular structures of your outer body. When combined with nutritional supplements, cellular functionality enhancement takes place on the inside. Together, nutritional supplements and spa treatments work synergistically together to enhance the benefits of each other.

Q: I feel and look healthy, why should I take nutritional supplements?
A: If you feel and look healthy, why not keep it that way? Taking nutritional supplements provides more benefits than just trying to deal with a certain health issue. Many take nutritional supplements as a preventative measure so that health issues do not arise in the future. The wonderful aspect of nutritional supplementation is that you are strengthening your body’s ability to heal and repair. So when those pesky infections try to sneak up on you, you and your body are prepared with enough ammunition to fight them off.

Q: How do I know which nutritional supplements are quality supplements?
A: Quality in nutritional supplements begins with the formulation. When formulated correctly, a nutritional supplement blends the right ingredients (those with clinical research backing their benefits) in the right amounts to create a product that does what it says. Secondly, quality in a nutritional supplement depends on how and where it is manufactured. It is important to know that a quality manufacturing facility follows the strictest guidelines laid out by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) and compliance authorities such as the Natural Products Association. When checking for quality, ask for the source and know what you are putting in your body.

Q: How do I know which products are the right ones for me?
A: To begin with, the most important nutrient for anyone is the one you are deficient in. We must realize that deficiencies in nutrients can cause a lot of problems for us. Some common conditions caused by nutrient deficiencies include: a weakened immune system, fatigue, weight gain, stress, lack of sleep and even heart conditions. Know your body. If you are unsure, ask an expert to help you understand where problems may originate inside of you. Having an understanding of where to look will help you figure out what to take.

Q: How do nutritional supplements work?
A: If you were to think of your body as a car then having a healthy diet would be considered your fuel and nutritional supplements would be the oil that helps run that car. Nutritional supplements work by giving your body the oil that it needs to function properly and efficiently. Thinking in biochemical terms, nutritional supplements provide the added support your cells need to function at an optimal level, ultimately leading to a well functioning body. They assist in the process of detoxification, free radical scavenging and system function enhancement. They help fill the gap of missing nutrients lost in today’s food.

Q: Why do some powdered Nutritional supplements clump in water and take longer to dissolve in water when mixed?
A: Many manufacturers add more dissolving and filler agents than actual active or the ‘good’ ingredients into their formulas, so the perception of dissolution is seen better in the eye of the user. We can’t speak for all other companies, but here at SXO we formulated our product line to be as natural as possible.

Q: What are antioxidants?
A: Simply put, antioxidants are free radical scavengers. Free radicals are unstable molecules formed naturally and unnaturally. Free radicals are always on the search for stable molecules that they can damage in order for them to fulfill this need to become a complete molecule. Their search leads them to our cells that they attack in order to become stable. These attacks create chain reactions of damage within our bodies leading to harsher health conditions. The purpose of antioxidants is to protect our cells from these free radicals, providing a defense mechanism that terminates them before they attack us. Antioxidants can be found in many places, but they are most potent in the right formulation of nutritional supplements.

Healthy Living!
Nutritional supplementation is a beneficial lifestyle change that anyone can take on. It is important to understand how and why your body works the way it does so that your nutritional goals can be met. Its always a good idea to talk to your health practitioner, doctor or naturopathic physician for what products may suit you best. Remember, set your health goals and reach to achieve them. Nutritional supplements are not an overnight answer, but a solution to a healthier lifestyle.

Why supplementing with nutritional products can benefit the health of spa goers

Think of your body as if it were a car; we need oil changes (cleansing the colon and circulatory system with nutrients to keep arteries, veins and our internal piping clear of toxic clogs), and gas (good carbs, proteins and fatty acids) to work properly. Most of our bodies are unable to fight the over attack on the natural defenses and when wrinkles, age spots, loss of elasticity in our skin appear its due to the ‘rusting effect’ of our bodies. The stress at the cellular level is a byproduct of free radical damage, a natural process in which unstable molecules disrupt cell and tissue functioning both inside and out. This is why supplementing is key to maintaining a functioning body all the way to the cellular level which eventually shows through your outer appearance from your skin, hair, nails, eyes, and lips people will notice a difference.

Many of us understand that eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and drinking enough water is an equation for a healthy lifestyle. In a recent survey by Thomson Medstat, they questioned obese Americans on their diets and exercise routines. Forty percent claimed they did ‘vigorous’ exercise at least three times per week, plus ate a balanced meal with fruits and vegetables. So what is the root of the problem? Do we convince ourselves that we are eating healthfully? Or could it be a combination of factors such as eating too much, or believing that processed foods are healthy and taste better then natural foods, or do we eat healthy and organic but the nutrient value of our foods are declining?

Creating cheap food for today that lack yesterday’s nutrition

Vital nutrients and minerals have dramatically declined in some of our most popular foods, including potatoes, tomatoes, bananas and apples, stated in numerous studies conducted in Canada, Britain and the U.S. In the last 50 years our fruits and vegetables have undergone a massive decline in nutrients. According the latest Canadian analysis potatoes have lost 100 percent of their vitamin A, 57 percent of its vitamin C and iron, and 28 percent of its calcium content. Take an orange for example, to obtain the same amount of vitamin C as our great grandparents did, we would now need to eat eight oranges instead of one. Think of the consequences of eating 8 oranges, yes an orange is healthy, but the calories and sugar content alone would throw your diet for a loop.

Why supplementation is key both internally and externally

We have no choice but to live in our present environment. Our food is less nourishing then in past decades, we over eat and we don’t exercise enough. Plus add our over stressed lifestyles, polluted environment and over medicated society our bodies become depleted of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, essential proteins, good carbs and the right fatty acids. Supplementing is key to maintaining a healthy body both inside and out! Using organic skin care products with essential nutrients can also penetrate the skin and allow for supple, refreshed and rejuvenated skin. The combination of healthy eating plus exercise plus supplementation plus spa treatments is an equation for healthy aging and complete vitality.

Reasons To Supplement

1. Food is lacking the nutrition we need to fight off everyday ailments

2. We would need to eat at least two times the amount of food our great grandparents did to obtain the same amount of nutrition – disturbing our diets

3. Our bodies become rusted over time due to pollution, smoke, alcohol, processed foods and UV light from the sun and artificial lights

4. Our body cannot produce the nutrients we need

Choosing a diet rich of nutrients

8 Characteristic foods in the high-tech diet developed over the past 100 years

One in every four people in North America is a victim of one or more degenerative diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, arthritis, learning and behavioral disorders, cancer, and peptic ulcers. Yet we seem to forget that there’s a connection between our health and all of these disease – the diet we consume either by choice or fortune.

According to Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D. and Morton Walker, D.P.M, authors of, “Putting It All Together: The New Orthomolecular Nutrition,” the characteristic of food over the past 100 years have become:

  1. Dead – modern storage of food only slows down the decaying of foods.

  2. Stale – to create foods that remain stable for a long period of time the nutritional value of the food was sacrificed leaving preservatives and nutrient deficient foods.

  3. Artifact – foods that say they are something but contain no derivatives of that food, for example tomato soup that contains no tomatoes.

  4. Toxic – high tech foods contain a number of chemicals used to create, prepare or manufacture processed foods.

  5. Exogenous – these types of foods are grown in other climatic regions in which our bodies are not accustomed to eating. For example colostrum, (immune building nutrients from cow’s milk), a domestic source is more likely to contain the healthy bacteria we need to ward off ailments than a foreign source that is exposed to other bacteria and viruses.

  6. Monotonous – processed foods of today depend heavily on only a few ingredients such as sugar, dairy by products or nutrient deficient grains. People begin to develop allergens and sensitivities over time due to these types of food. Allergies can be avoided by rotating the diet with a variety of foods.

  7. Overabundant – eating too much of certain foods, such as sugar can lead to obesity – an epidemic felt across the world.

  8. Artificially flavored – our ancestors used herbs and plants to mask the awful taste of foods which added yet more nutrients to the diet. Today, foods contain synthetic flavoring which add no known nutritional value, but worse yet make the foods so attractive that we forget to stop eating after the first and second helping

Understanding our diet of today will play a crucial role in the health of our body 5, 10, 20 or even 50 years from now. We know that we eat too much sugar, not enough vegetables or fruits and have very low fiber diets – and yet wonder why we suffer from so many ailments. Choosing the right nutrients is key to maintaining a healthy and youthful body.

Choosing The Good Instead of the Ugly

Good Carb’s – The brain is the only organ in the body that depends primarily upon sugar for its energy. When we consume refined carbohydrates (cookies, cakes, soda, white sugar and flour) our bodies tend to have sugar crashes depriving our brain of its energy source. Whereas if we choose complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and brown rice we maintain a stable blood sugar level fueling our brain and other organs without sugar crashes.

Good Proteins – These nutrients are essential for the health of our skin, bones, teeth, hair, and within the body they maintain the health of enzymes, antibodies, and hormones. Picking quality proteins is key to good health. Combine grains, legumes, seeds and vegetables to help create a complete protein meal. However, more traditional protein choices include fish, seafood, and white meats such as turkey, chicken, and pork (not bacon as Atkins would have it).

Good Fats – Fats have received very bad press for the last three decades. But in reality we need certain fats for good health. Animal fat such as beef is high in saturated fat, and processed foods contain too many trans fats that can clog our arteries. The good fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats such as avocados, olives, old-fashioned peanut butter, fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, tuna, herring), nuts, and flaxseed.

The link between spa and nutrition

What is Nutrition?
Nutrition is the study of how food nourishes your body and our behavior towards food. We all want to understand how food affects the health of our body – it’s natural, because we love food and we care about our health. Knowing and understanding nutrition can benefit both our physical and mental health, allowing us to enjoy the food we eat and appreciate our outer appearance.

Why Nutrition?

If you live to 65 years old you will have had over 70,000 meals and your body would have expelled at least 50 tons of food. From this food our extraordinary body renews its structures, and each day it builds a bit more muscle, bone, skin and blood, replacing old tissues with new ones. It may also add a little fat, if we consume too much, or subtract a little, if we consume less than our bodies require. Remember the saying “you are what you eat”, we can assume with confidence that the food we eat today, becomes a part of us tomorrow.

The value of eating nourishing nutrients benefits our body by maintaining strong muscles and bones, healthy skin, and sufficient blood to cleanse and nourish all parts of the body. This is dependant on energy yielding nutrients such as water, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamins. If the foods you eat provide too much or too little, the health of our body can become ill, unhealthy or imbalanced.

QUIZ:

  1. How often do you drink soda?
    a. Rarely
    b. Occasionally (not every day)
    c. Frequently - at least one a day, it’s my energy source

When natural foods are consumed they provide a very intricate relationship of proteins, fats and carbohydrate interlaced with vitamins and minerals. When you drink a soda, you fool the stomach with what appears to be food. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is released every time we eat to help digest protein. As you drink a soda the hydrochloric acid remains in the stomach since there is no protein to digest. The only protein to buffer the acid is the lining of your stomach – which can lead to peptic ulcers and other ailments of the digestive tract.

  2. How often do you have a bowel movement?
    a. At least once every 24 hours or more
    b. Every 2-3 days
    c. Every 4-5 days

A diet high in fiber helps keep our internal piping clean. Fiber helps maintain healthy blood sugar, digestive system and may help in weight loss. When the normal amount of fiber is consumed (25-30 grams per day), the normal transit time of feces through the digestive tract is 24-48 hours. Low fiber diets can increase the normal flow up to 96 or more hours. When fecal matter is impacted in the colon the toxins can be reabsorbed into the blood stream and begin to pollute our blood and organs, which can lead to the poisoning of the body.

  3. How much do you exercise?
    a. 4-5 days per week
    b. 3 days per week
    c. 0-1 day(s) per week

Getting at least 30 minutes of some sort of exercise, three or more times a week will help keep your heart and overall body in healthy condition. Make sure you consult with your primary health practitioner before you start a new exercise routine.

  4. Do you believe that supplementation is part of a healthy diet?
    True
    False

How Much Water Do You Really Need & What Type?

Water plays a fundamental role in our existence and our health, which is why it is so important to know how much water you need. The latest research shows that drinking just eight glasses of water daily can decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45 percent; bladder cancer by 50 percent and it can potentially even reduce the risk of breast cancer. Experts say that eight glasses of water daily should be the goal for everyone, however some people may need more. Some experts believe that water consumption should be more like 10-12 glasses and for optimal benefits 14-16 glasses daily. Remember caffeinated drinks should not be counted towards your daily water intake as they actually cause the body to excrete water.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Try drinking one glass of water every one to two hours for one week and jot down your results! Want to share your story? We are waiting to hear from you, email us (info@sequencexo.com).

What kind of water should you be drinking?

There are many different forms of water available for consumption with today’s technology. It is important to understand the benefits of each to ensure that you are drinking the right amount and the right type of water. Below is the list of the most popular water options available and explanations of how they benefit your health.

Ionized water
What is it?
Water treated with electrolysis to remove acidic particles, such as sodium, calcium, iron, copper, chloride and bromide. The water has been purified from most impurities except organic compounds.

Benefits:

  • Acts as a natural antioxidant
  • Helps with the body’s natural oxygen production
  • Stabilizes body’s acid/alkaline balance – balancing the body’s pH
  • The molecular structure of ionized water is smaller, which allows for easier passage into the cells and tissues
  • Used externally, ionized water is beneficial for healthy skin, hair and scalp

Distilled water
What is it?
Water that has been heated to a boiling point eliminating impurities from the water as it vaporizes. Through a distiller, the vapor water is then cooled to become pure liquid water while the impurities such as the metals, ions, minerals, and contaminants are disposed of.

Benefits:
  • Helps to flush out impurities from the body
  • Allows the proper “flushing” of the blood through the kidneys, not having to have to deal with other impurities found in un-distilled water.
  • No impurities, just pure H2O
  • Acts as a solvent in the body by dissolving nutrients so they can be assimilated by the cell
  • Collects “rejected” minerals and flushes them out as waste

Filtered water
What is it?
Water that has been filtered through a carbon based filter to remove chemical agents such as chlorine.

Benefits:
  • Ensures that only organic minerals are retained in the water
  • Helps to remove synthetic compounds, which turn into vapor at relatively low temperatures leading to toxins in the body if not removed

Water & Spa

The Benefits of Water for a Healthy Body

For centuries the ‘spa’ has been a place where people go to take part of the healing power of water. Historically physicians have prescribed water to help in the healing of rheumatism, arthritis, skin irritation, infertility, sore muscles and inflammation. Though as modern medicine evolved, the idea behind “folklore remedies” was placed under scrutiny as the shift in medicine went towards curing instead of preventing disease. But the good news is that recent trends show that water treatments are becoming increasingly popular again. Spas across the nation are turning toward filtered water systems for their guests to enjoy a clean and rejuvenating soak for a beautiful appearance.

Underwater Massages:
Warm water raises body temperature, which helps in the relaxation of muscles, mind and spirit. This type of massage helps relieve tension in athletes or orthopedic and muscular weaknesses.

Soothing Showers:
Playing with temperature can help energize the body, as well as increasing its circulatory response. You can also add an exotic exfoliating scrub to help renew and soften your clients skin.

Soaking Baths:
Submerging into a nice bath helps spa goers de-stress from the everyday hustle and bustle. Baths with salt help relax tension in muscles. Whey protein is an excellent soothing agent from skin irritations and mud soaks help detoxify the body from the everyday environmental toxins our bodies are exposed to.

3 Things You Need To Know About Choosing a Quality Nutritional Product

One: Research & Clinical Studies
Formulating a nutritional supplement is like putting together a recipe for a dish. Just like in food, you have fast food recipes put together by cooks and then those that are restaurant quality entrees prepared by chefs. Quality formulations originate from careful research suggesting safe uses of ingredients in the appropriate dosages to synergistically offer the end consumer a quality product for better health. Detailed research is required from clinical studies and research papers to pinpoint the right ingredients to be used in unison for a formula to accomplish the company’s goal – providing effective, safe and uncompromising quality to the end user. Experience and education also play a key role in understanding the difference of a good versus excellent formula. Educating yourself as well as asking your vender's for help can keep you educated and ahead of your competitors.

Great Nutritional Learning Sites:

www.nih.gov – Health Information
www.healthynotes.com – Health & Lifestyle Information
www.herbalgram.org – Research & Information about responsible use of herbs and medicinal plants

Two: Relationships Between Manufacture & Supplier
When evaluating the ingredients of a nutritional product, it is important to focus on the origins of the ingredients and how they are obtained. Quality ingredients are harvested at optimal conditions so that the purest extracts are retrieved. During the extraction process, it is key that some ingredients go through the extraction process under low heat so that active ingredients are not destroyed. On the same token some will need to go through the extraction process under high heat so that the purest active ingredients are obtained. Pure and safe ingredients are also grown without pesticide contamination or any genetic alteration for better growth. It is difficult to distinguish pure and safe products from others, which is why the manufacturing facility is so important to you and the products you have on your shelf. Manufacturing facilities with strict regulations have established relationships with key suppliers that offer safe and pure raw materials.

TIP OF THE WEEK: Ask your suppliers for more information about their manufacturing facilities such as licenses, inspection seals, and cGMP’s.

Want to know what a GMP stands for? Read in our next section, Quality Manufacturing

Three: Manufacturing Quality – GMP & What It Means For You
GMPs stand for “Good Manufacturing practices.” In general, GMPs describe the methods, equipment, facilities, and controls required for the production of dietary supplements. They define a quality system that manufacturers use to produce quality products on a consistent basis. The GMPs set requirements for creating quality control procedures, designing and manufacturing plants, and identity testing of both individual ingredients and finished products. When a manufacturing facility is certified under GMP standards, then the consumer can be confident that the products are manufacture with quality and assurance.
